Peter B. Thomsen
Peter is a multimedia craftsman who was raised on the rocky shores of Gloucester, Massachusetts, then hopped a hundred miles inland to study Design & Architecture at Hampshire College, and then leaped another thousand miles to Chicago, apparently to make spoons. Living and working surrounded by things he has made, Peter believes that the objects we use everyday really matter, and that there is no reason the simplest tool– like the spoon you use to stir a big ol' pot of spaghetti– shouldn't be as beautiful as it is useful.
Let's work together.
Solar CalendarThis sculpture acts as a solar calendar, with two sets of holes aligning with the sun on certain dates and times. The holes have a color filter to indicate the date– red on the summer solstice and blue on the winter, with appropriate steps in between. | Solar CalendarThis project (see prev image for desc) was made possible through precise modeling in Rhino. | Solar CalendarA fabricated prototype of the calendar (see prev two images for details). |

LED PlanterDerived from a material experiment, this planter functions as both sculpture and accent light. | Bike Storage RampStoring your bike vertically is space efficient, but can prove physically difficult for some users. This ramp allows momentum to do the heavy lifting! |
Warhol MuseumThis conceptual design for a rooftop addition to the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh, PA incorporates and abstracts his famous screenprint. The motif both dictates and is deconstructed in the structure’s form, articulation, and plan, amounting to an homage to and critique of the artist. | elevationsee prev desc | Warhol Museum plansee prev desc |

Ethiopian PreschoolWorking the NGO Imagine1Day, this design for a preschool melds environmental principles (solar positioning, passive cooling, etc) with built in play structure. | Antarctic PreschoolAs a challenge in environmental design, this is a rework of the Ethiopian Preschool concept (see prev image) for use in a very different climate: the Amundsen–Scott research base in Antarctica. | Antarctic PreschoolAs a challenge in environmental design, this is a rework of the Ethiopian Preschool concept (see prev images) for use in a very different climate: the Amundsen–Scott research base in Antarctica. |

Final Pin UpThe final pin up for my thesis, with six studies on the left and a cumulative final on the right. | Example Study: LightAs a part of the project, I did a stand-alone graphic lay out for each study. This is a study that contrasted light source with program. | Example Study: UnusedAs a part of the project, I did a stand-alone graphic lay out for each study. This is a study meant to draw attention to an unused space created by the surrounding architecture. |
